Pacemaker
(artificial) - In cardiology,
an electrical device that substitutes for a malfunctioning
natural pacemaker (node) to control the beating
of the heart.
Pacemaker (temporary)
- An electronic cardiac pacemaker placed externally
on a patients body. Intended for temporary
use, usually until an internal pacemaker is surgically
implanted.
Pacer - A pacemaker.
Pacing - The
setting of the rate or pace.
Palpitation - The
rapid, pounding or fluttering of the heart, as perceived
by the patient.
Pericardial Effusion
- A collection of fluid or blood in the pericardial
space (inside the pericardial sac) around the heart.
Some causes include congestive heart failure, cancer
and autoimmune disease.
Preeclampsia - Hypertension
and/or swelling during pregnancy.
Prognosis - The
probable outcome of a disease.
Prolapse - A
falling or dropping down.
Pulmonary - Referring
to the lungs.
Pulmonary Arteries
- The arteries that carry venous blood from
the right ventricle to the lungs.
Pulmonary Valve
- The heart valve that divides the right ventricle
and the pulmonary artery. The pulmonary valve opens
when the right ventricle contracts allowing blood
to flow into the pulmonary artery. The pulmonary
valve has 3 valve cusps.
Pulmonary Veins
- The veins that carry oxygenated blood from
the lungs to the left atrium of the heart.
Pulse - The
rate or rhythm of blood traveling through the arteries
as a result of each heartbeat.
Pyrosis - Pain
or burning sensation in the area of the breast bone,
usually resulting from regurgitation of acid peptic
gastric content into the esophagus.
